What is the

Girl Scout Gold Award

The Gold Award is the most prestigious award in the the world of girls and is the most difficult to earn through the Girl Scouts.  As a Gold Award Girl Scout, you are challenged to change the world-or at least your corner of it.  Young women are inspired future leaders whose projects are impacting the worlds of STEM, education, agriculture, medicine, and more on a local, national, or global level.

What is a Sensory Garden?

I have selected as my Gold Award project to build a self sustaining sensory garden to service the military community and our Japanese Military families at Yokota Air Base Japan.  What is a sensory garden you ask?  It is a garden that stimulates the 5 senses: Sight, Sound, Touch, Smell, and Taste.  The real focus of the garden is to teach “Grounding,” a technique used with anxiety, depression, autism, and sensory processing disorders.

Who can visit the garden?

Everyone from children to adults who have access to any US military base will find a way to enjoy this gnome filled plot of happiness.  The smaller sensory garden is located in the larger American Red Cross Healing Garden.  Through the generosity of the American Red Cross and Yokota Air Base, dreams turned into reality.

How do I get to the garden?

The gardens are located on the West side of Yokota Air Base.  After you go through the gate and cross the railroad tracks, take your first right next to the Shoppette.  Continue down this road until you see building #3304 on your left.  Turn into the parking lot right past this building on the left and you will see building #3303.  The gardens are located behind this building!
